Spring Water Quality: The Real Numbers

Spring isn't a city — it's unincorporated Harris County served by dozens of MUDs. Most buy surface water from the North Harris County Regional Water Authority (NHCRWA), treated at Houston's Northeast Water Purification Plant from Lake Houston. Some MUDs still blend groundwater from the Gulf Coast Aquifer.

What This Means

Spring's water meets EPA standards — but there's more going on than most people realize. Your treatment needs depend on which MUD you're in.

  • Hardness at 120-200 ppm causes scale in pipes, water heaters, and tankless units. Groundwater-only MUDs run harder (160-200+ ppm). Surface water areas are somewhat softer but still enough to cause problems.
  • Chloramines — most Spring MUDs use chloramines regardless of whether they're on surface water or groundwater. It's not just a surface water thing. Chloramines require catalytic carbon filtration — standard carbon filters won't cut it.
  • Arsenic at 2-3 ppb is primarily a concern for MUDs receiving NHCRWA surface water (TX1013298), not all Spring MUDs. Groundwater-only MUDs like MUD 249 show no arsenic detected. RO at the kitchen sink removes it from drinking water if your MUD has it.
  • Disinfection byproducts (TTHMs, HAA5) are higher on surface water MUDs. Groundwater MUDs on chloramines tend to have lower or non-detect DBPs since there's less organic matter in well water to react with. Catalytic carbon filtration reduces them either way.

Sources: NHCRWA (TX1013298), Harris County MUD 249 2024 CCR (TX1013135), MUD 82 2023 CCR, Houston Main System 2024 CCR (TX1010013)

Water Source by Area

Spring's water varies by MUD — some use surface water, others use groundwater. Chloramines are common across both. Here's what we typically see:

Water SourceHardnessDisinfectantDBPsAreas
NHCRWA Surface Water120-160 ppmChloraminesHigher DBPsGleannloch Farms, Spring Trails, newer MUDs
Groundwater + Chloramines160-200 ppmChloraminesLow/no DBPsSpring Falls, Spring Lakes, parts of Klein near Louetta
Groundwater + Free Chlorine160-200+ ppmFree ChlorineModerate DBPsOlder MUDs near I-45, Bammel (e.g., MUD 82)

Not sure which MUD you're on or what's in your water? We test it for free and tell you exactly what you're dealing with — including whether you're on chloramine or chlorine.
