Water Softener & Filtration in Sugar Land, TX

Sugar Land's four water systems deliver some of the cleanest treated water in the Houston metro — TTHMs and HAA5 are a fraction of neighboring cities. But hardness still runs 90–171 ppm depending on your system, arsenic reaches 4.3 ppb in Greatwood, and the Main System uses chloramines. We test YOUR water before recommending anything. Softeners from $2,965 installed.

"They knew exactly which Sugar Land system we're on and what that means for our water. No guessing — just data and honest recommendations."

— Mike T., First Colony

What's Actually in Sugar Land Water?

Sugar Land is unique: a single city operating four independent, disconnected water systems. The Main System (80,000+ residents) blends Brazos River surface water with groundwater and uses chloramines. River Park, New Territory, and Greatwood are 100% groundwater with free chlorine.

The good news? Sugar Land's disinfection byproducts are the lowest we've seen in the Houston metro. TTHMs max out at 5.6 ppb vs the 80 ppb EPA limit — compare that to Cypress at 56 ppb.

The issues that remain: hardness (90–171 ppm causes scale everywhere), arsenic (detected in Greatwood and New Territory), and chloramines in the Main System requiring catalytic carbon filtration.

Water Quality Data — Sugar Land (All Systems)

These are actual CCR-reported values — not estimates. Sugar Land provides the most complete water quality data of any city in the Houston metro.

What This Means

Sugar Land's water is exceptionally clean by Houston standards — but the issues that remain are still worth addressing.

  • DBPs are the lowest in our service area. TTHMs at 2.3–5.6 ppb and HAA5 at 5.5 ppb are excellent. The Brazos River source and city treatment processes deserve credit here.
  • Hardness still causes scale everywhere. Even River Park at 90 ppm (the softest in the metro) is above the threshold where minerals deposit on fixtures and inside water heaters. New Territory at 171 ppm sees significant buildup.
  • Arsenic is a geographic issue. Greatwood (4.3 ppb, deepest wells) and New Territory (2.6 ppb) have detectable arsenic. Main System and River Park show none. All levels are legal but exceed health-based guidelines by 650–1,075×.
  • The Main System uses chloramines because it blends surface water. The three groundwater systems use free chlorine. This determines whether you need catalytic carbon ($3,850) or standard carbon ($3,450).

Water Quality by System

Sugar Land operates four independent water systems. They're not connected — your address determines your water quality. Check your water bill or ask us which system you're on.

Main System

Chloramines

Blended — Brazos River/Oyster Creek surface + Chicot/Evangeline wells

Hardness:125 ppm
Arsenic:Not detected
TTHMs:5.6 ppb
HAA5:5.5 ppb
Largest system (80K+ people). Only system using chloramines. Uses chlorine dioxide as secondary disinfectant.
Areas: First Colony, Sweetwater, Telfair, Commonwealth, Avalon, most of Sugar Land east of Brazos River

River Park

Free Chlorine

100% Groundwater — Chicot/Evangeline (1,342 ft avg depth)

Hardness:90 ppm
Arsenic:Not detected
TTHMs:2.4 ppb
HAA5:Below detection
Softest water in Sugar Land and entire Houston metro series. Smallest system (3,700 people).
Areas: River Park subdivision west of Brazos River

New Territory

Free Chlorine

100% Groundwater — Chicot/Evangeline (1,000 ft avg, shallowest)

Hardness:171 ppm
Arsenic:2.6 ppb
TTHMs:2.3 ppb
HAA5:Below detection
Hardest water in Sugar Land. Elevated iron (avg 145 ppb). Shallowest wells.
Areas: New Territory subdivision

Greatwood

Free Chlorine

100% Groundwater — Chicot/Evangeline (1,600 ft avg, deepest)

Hardness:103 ppm
Arsenic:4.3 ppb
TTHMs:3.5 ppb
HAA5:Below detection
Highest arsenic (43% of EPA limit). Deepest wells. Highest sodium (85.9 ppm), TDS (345 ppm), radium (2.6 pCi/L).
Areas: Greatwood subdivision

Different from most Houston-area cities: Sugar Land's surface water comes from the Brazos River and Oyster Creek — not Lake Houston like Cypress, The Woodlands, and most of northwest Houston. Different watershed = different water chemistry.
