Your MUD Determines Your Setup
Cypress has no city water utility — every neighborhood is served by a MUD, and your neighbor across the street may be on a different system. The disinfectant your MUD uses decides whether you need catalytic carbon with your softener. From the districts' own Consumer Confidence Reports:
| Area (MUD) | Disinfectant | Hardness | Recommended Setup | Package |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bridgeland (MUD 419/418) | Chloramines | 150–180 ppm | Softener + catalytic carbon | Better ($3,850) or Best ($4,650) |
| Towne Lake (MUD 500) | Chloramines | 100–140 ppm | Softener + catalytic carbon | Better ($3,850) |
| Copperfield (MUD 208) | Chloramines | 150–200 ppm | Softener + catalytic carbon | Better ($3,850) or Best ($4,650) |
| Coles Crossing (MUD 364) | Free chlorine | 180–220 ppm | Softener + standard carbon | Good ($2,965) or Better ($3,850) |

Why chloramines change the equipment
Chloramine (chlorine bonded with ammonia) is far more stable than free chlorine — standard activated carbon can't break it down effectively. Catalytic carbon can. If your MUD buys WHCRWA surface water, a softener alone leaves the chemical taste and disinfection byproducts untouched, which is why we pair it with a catalytic carbon stage. More detail in our chloramine guide.
What Softening Fixes in Cypress — and What It Doesn't
A softener handles:
- Scale on fixtures, glass shower doors, and appliances (150-200+ ppm hardness)
- Water heater efficiency loss — scale can cut efficiency up to 29%
- Dry skin and hair, stiff laundry, spotted dishes
It does not handle:
- •Chloramine taste/odor — needs catalytic carbon (Better/Best packages)
- •Arsenic (2-5.66 ppb across Cypress MUDs) — the $475 under-sink RO add-on removes it at the drinking tap
- •Disinfection byproducts (TTHMs up to 56 ppb) — also a carbon job
This is why most Cypress homes end up with the Better package — one 2.0 cu.ft. system that softens and filters in a single tank.
